Date Of Creation7 December 1699
Extent2 ff
LevelItem/file
Content DescriptionRefers to the King's reply, relating that he has provided for Mr Prior elsewhere and is happy for them to dispose of the post of secretary; admits that he has not thanked the King, being too proud, but states that he had expected something more personal from him; reports, however, that he has instructed their Chancellor to let the King know that on this occasion, as always, he had only the King's service in mind.

Thanks Lady Russell for reflecting on what Lord Hartington might be able to do on his behalf; refers to a memorandum which Mr Carter will give her and states that if anything in it is unclear, Mr Carter will be able to explain it, being well informed about matters.

Refers to a letter for the Cardinal, which, subject to her approval will be sent via Mr Boyer, included in the mail for the Consul of Venice; notes his agreement that it is too late now to send horses and that it would be better to send the 200 "pistoles", offering to send horses when requested; discusses suitable prices for horses.

Comments he is happy Lord Tavistock has left France as "c'est un pais dangereus pour le jeu"; notes that he [Tavistock] was clearly annoyed by the affair of the 200 pistoles as he has not written to him since and asks Lady Russell to try and reconcile them.

Allays any concerns over the way in which he is planning to send his letter to the Cardinal.
