Content DescriptionAutograph journal of Lord William Pelham-Clinton, beginning with departure from London on 21 December 1839 and concluding with return to London on 2 August 1840. Lord William provides detailed observations of the places and people seen during his travels, which took him from Le Havre through France and Italy, before returning to London via Lyon, Paris and Ramsgate.

His route through France and Italy took in Rouen, Tours, Nantes, La Rochelle, Rochfort, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Marseilles, Rome, Foligno, Macerata, Ancona, Rimini, Bologna, Rovigo, Venice, Padua, Bologna for the second time, Covigliano, Florence, Lucca, Livorno, Rome for the second time, Naples, Castellammare, Salerno, Naples for the second time, Rome for the third time, Genoa and Turin.

The account is written on the right hand pages. The blank left hand pages are used to note the date of arrival in particular centres and occasional notes, particularly concerning buildings, sculptures and paintings.
