Content DescriptionThe original paintings have a variety of sources, and neither their provenance nor their dating has been certainly established. It appears likely that they were acquired in whole or in part by Francis Willughby in the course of his continental travels in 1663-65. Some certainly have a continental origin and some may date back to the late 16th century. Their gathering in this volume was made up perhaps as late as the early nineteenth century, drawing on earlier loose illustrations.
