Admin HistoryThese papers form part of the larger Manvers Collection, and were generated in the course of the management of the family's estate business. For details about the Pierrepont family and their estates, see the collection-level description for Manvers. In subject matter and date, they complement other groups of papers in the Manvers Collection. There are many areas of overlap between these groups, which are catalogued separately because of the date and manner of their transfer to the University.
Custodial HistoryThese papers form a sub-fonds of the Manvers Collection (GB 0159 Ma) and were presented to the University library, by a family member, in 1948. The reference number was 'M' until 2008, when this part of the collection was re-numbered 'Ma'.

A small number of settlements of the estates are present, dating from 1743 to 1838.

There are a large number of 18th century estate papers including papers relating to the Buckinghamshire estate at Hanslope and Barnwood Forest, the Lincolnshire estate at Bassingthorpe cum Westby, Langton, Newball and Hemingby, and the Shropshire estate at Tong, 1703-77; bundles of letters addressed to William Pickin, estate agent, 1780-99; bundles of papers relating to the Holme Pierrepont estate, c.1731-87; correspondence relating to the Duchess of Kingston's dower estates, 1773-86; correspondence relating to the Abbey Baths and water supply at Bath, 1759-1814; an estate book providing notes on lands and tenants for Laxton, Kneesall, Dunham, Kirkby, Eakring and Weston, 1742; and a register of leases granted by the Marquess of Dorchester, 1680.

There is an exceptionally fine series of rentals and accounts, continuous for the greater part of the 18th century, and including all estates. Mixed volumes of rentals and accounts for the whole estate start in 1678 and continue to 1780. Rental receipt books for the Holme Pierrepont estate, signed by the owners of the estate, exist from 1772 to 1807, and are complemented by account books kept by the agents for the Holme Pierrepont Collection, 1755-1807 [see Ma A-X and Ma 6 for continuations of these volumes]. Household account books dated 1737-80 also form part of this series.

The collection also includes Derbyshire colliery accounts, cash books and vouchers, from Owlcotes Colliery (1800-1834), Birley Colliery (1786-1822), and High Lane Colliery (1786-1825). A series of household inventories and valuations includes appraisements of the property of the late Duke of Kingston, 1726.

Valuations of the Beighton estate, the Holme Pierrepont estate and the Sneinton estate, made in 1862, form part of this collection. They are complemented in the second deposit (Ma A-X) by surveys of estates at Adwick, Calow, Crowle, Walkeringham, Edwinstowe, Kneesall, Eakring, Laxton, and Weston etc.

There is also a series of surveys, enclosure and tithe records relating to Laxton (1728-1866), Eakring (1737-1841), Cotgrave (1731-1791), Radcliffe-on-Trent (late 18th century), Gedling etc. (1740-1794), Dunham and Fledborough (1789-1810), Ollerton (1739-1841), Kneesall (1840), Edwinstowe, Budby, Perlethorpe and Thoresby (1842-1843), Beighton, Calow and Owlcotes (1744-1863), Hanslope (1747-1763), Wiltshire estates (1752), and Crowle, Bassingthorpe etc. in Lincolnshire (1789-1830).

Manorial court records exist for Crowle (1692-1859), Widmerpool (1680-1718), Cotgrave (1700-04), Orston (1711), Eakring (1653-1718) and Weston (1682-1751).

There are very few personal or family papers in this collection. Exceptions are papers relating to the naturalisation of the 2nd Duke of Kingston's mistress Marie Therese de la Touche, 1739-1741; and some copy baptism, marriage and burial certificates.
