Date Of CreationJanuary 1929-February 1929
Extent108 ff (plus inserted 2 ff)

Content DescriptionTypescript of D.H. Lawrence, 'Pansies' (Roberts E302.g); comprises a 2 page foreword, 3 pages of contents and 103 pages containing 230 poems; a single page catalogue description typed by W. Forster and single page 'History of the Typescript' by John Taylor Caldwell have been inserted after the foreword.

The foreword ends with 'Bandol 1929' and differs from those published in the first edition of 'Pansies' published by Martin Secker, July 1929 and the definitive edition privately printed by Charles Lahr, August 1929. This Foreword was later published by Libanus Press as a limited edition of 200 copies with an introduction by Keith Sagar, see: 'Foreword to Pansies' by D.H. Lawrence (Marlborough: Libanus Press for W. Forster, 1988)

A typescript catalogue description by Forster has been inserted between the foreword and the text of the poems, giving a brief description of the typescript; this description also comments on the foreword which 'differs entirely' from that published in the [Martin] Secker 1929 edition.

The inner cover of the file in which this typescript is held has been marked 'Pages to be retyped 164, 183, 184, 185'; a pencil note on the cover has been erased.

Page order: Contents [pp.1-3], Forword pp.[1]-2; main text pp.1-103; note that there are extensive alterations to page numbers from p.66 onwards; n.b. entry E302.g in W. Roberts and P. Poplawski 'A Bibliography of D.H. Lawrence' 3rd ed. suggests that the original running order was as follows: pp.1-65, 69, 66-68, 70-103.

The poems appear largely in the order in which they were published in the definitive edition; there are a number of minor corrections, possibly in the hand of D.H. Lawrence: p 22 addition of the title 'O start a revolution-', p 45 transposition of a word, pp 55 and 102 extra space indicated, pp 63 and 78 accents added, p 88 correction and indication of insertion of 2 lines, p 103 placing of omitted stanza indicated.

In the contents, there is a cross, probably added by D.H. Lawrence, in the margin in front of the following titles: 'The noble englishman', 'Women want fighters for their lovers', 'Ego-bound women', 'There is no way out', 'My naughty book', 'The little wowser', 'The young and their moral guardians', 'What does she want?', 'Don't look at me', 'Demon justice'; the titles marked were left out of Martin Secker's first edition of 'Pansies'.

The TS (Roberts E302.g) is sometimes referred to as the Aldred typescript; A 'History of the typescript' by John Taylor Caldwell has been inserted after the foreword, dated 1975; Caldwell's summary states that Lawrence sent this typescript to Guy Aldred, a Communist and champion of the free press, thinking that Aldred might publish it privately; Aldred declined and the definitive edition was published by Charles Lahr; the typescript survived in Aldred's possession until his death in 1963 and was left to John Taylor Caldwell by Aldred's widow in 1971; it was bought at auction by W. Forster in 1975, and was sold after his death.
